# Game-by-game analysis
### 1. #3 Notre Dame @ North Carolina
**Prediction: Notre Dame 38–17**
Notre Dame enters at 4–0 and has been particularly impressive offensively. The Irish just put **49 points on Purdue**, with CJ Carr accounting for four touchdowns. Their recent scoring output against Purdue has been extraordinary: 66, 56 and 49 points in their last three meetings. ([SI][3])
North Carolina gets the advantage of Kenan Stadium, but the matchup is difficult because Notre Dame's defense should be able to generate pressure while its offense has considerably more consistency.
The biggest question is whether UNC can keep the game within one or two scores into the second half. I expect Notre Dame to gradually pull away.
**Projected: Notre Dame 38, North Carolina 17**
---
### 2. Boston College @ #21 SMU
**Prediction: SMU 34–20**
SMU is 3–1 and has moved into the AP Top 25 at No. 21. The Mustangs are at home, which matters here.
Boston College is capable of creating some problems early, but SMU has the more explosive offensive profile. I expect BC to have enough success to score around 20, but SMU should create more sustained drives.
The main concern for SMU is that Boston College could make this uncomfortable if it controls possession and keeps SMU's offense on the sideline.
**Projected: SMU 34, Boston College 20**
---
### 3. #7 Alabama @ #16 Mississippi State
**Prediction: Alabama 34–27**
This is one of the most interesting games of the entire Saturday.
Both teams are **4–0**, and this is a matchup between two young quarterbacks who have attracted significant attention: Alabama's Keelon Russell and Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor. ([Yahoo Sports][4])
Alabama just destroyed South Carolina **49–18**, with Russell throwing four touchdown passes without an interception and Alabama adding two rushing touchdowns. Mississippi State, meanwhile, is coming off its important win over Missouri. ([SI][3])
Mississippi State has home-field advantage and enough offensive explosiveness to make this a real four-quarter game.
But Alabama has the more proven overall roster and has been extremely efficient offensively.
**My key factor:** Alabama's ability to avoid turnovers.
If the Crimson Tide are even or better in turnover margin, I expect them to survive Starkville.
**Projected: Alabama 34, Mississippi State 27**
---
### 4. UCF @ #20 Houston
**Prediction: Houston 31–27**
This is one of my more difficult predictions.
Houston is ranked No. 20 and is 3–1, while UCF is also 3–1. Houston's home-field advantage gives the Cougars a meaningful boost.
Houston is coming off a **42–28** victory over Georgia Southern, while UCF has enough offensive ability to make this a high-pressure game for Houston's defense. ([SI][3])
I expect both offenses to have stretches of success.
Ultimately, Houston's home-field advantage and ability to make a few more critical defensive plays lead me to a narrow win.
**Projected: Houston 31, UCF 27**
---
### 5. Vanderbilt @ #2 Georgia
**Prediction: Georgia 38–17**
Georgia is 4–0 and remains No. 2 nationally.
The Bulldogs just dominated Oklahoma **41–13**, while Vanderbilt comes in at 3–1. Georgia's defense should make it difficult for Vanderbilt to sustain drives consistently.
The matchup also favors Georgia's depth as the game progresses.
Vanderbilt can potentially keep the first half competitive, but I expect Georgia to take control through its rushing attack and defensive pressure.
**Projected: Georgia 38, Vanderbilt 17**
---
### 6. #8 Florida @ #25 Missouri
**Prediction: Florida 34–27**
This is one of the games where I expect the final margin to be considerably smaller than the rankings might suggest.
Florida just produced one of the biggest statements of the season, defeating then-No. 4 Ole Miss **52–28**. Florida jumped from No. 21 to No. 8 after that performance. ([AP News][5])
The Gators have been averaging more than 50 points per game, and RB Jadan Baugh has emerged as a major offensive factor. ([SI][6])
But Missouri is at home and is 3–1.
This is why I don't project a blowout.
Florida should have the better offense, but Missouri's home environment and ability to answer offensively should keep this competitive.
**Projected: Florida 34, Missouri 27**
---
### 7. Auburn @ #17 Tennessee
**Prediction: Tennessee 31–24**
This is a bounce-back opportunity for Tennessee after the Volunteers lost a tight **20–17** game to No. 1 Texas.
The biggest concern from that game was Tennessee's offensive line. Texas recorded **six sacks**, while Colin Simmons had five himself. Tennessee also allowed numerous tackles for loss. ([SI][3])
That is exactly what Tennessee needs to fix.
Auburn is capable of exploiting offensive-line problems, but Tennessee's home-field advantage and offensive talent give it the edge.
I expect Tennessee to establish the run more effectively than it did against Texas and give its quarterback cleaner passing opportunities.
**Projected: Tennessee 31, Auburn 24**
---
### 8. #5 Ohio State @ #14 Iowa
**Prediction: Ohio State 27–17**
**This is probably my toughest score prediction.**
Iowa is 4–0 and just defeated Michigan **20–19** with a last-second touchdown. More importantly, Iowa currently has the nation's **No. 1 scoring defense**, allowing only **8.0 points per game**, and has surrendered just three touchdowns all season. ([Black Heart Gold Pants][7])
But Ohio State presents a very different offensive challenge.
The Buckeyes have Julian Sayin at quarterback and one of the country's most dangerous receivers in Jeremiah Smith. Smith just destroyed Illinois for **12 catches, 217 yards and four touchdowns**. ([Covers.com][8])
Iowa's defensive structure should prevent Ohio State from simply running away.
However, Ohio State's passing game is substantially more explosive than the offenses Iowa has faced recently.
I expect Iowa to keep the score low for a while, but Ohio State eventually produces enough explosive plays.
**Projected: Ohio State 27, Iowa 17**
---
### 9. #24 Kentucky @ South Carolina
**Prediction: Kentucky 27–24**
This is another very close game.
Kentucky is ranked No. 24 after moving into the poll at 3–1. South Carolina is 2–2 and has already faced Alabama.
Kentucky's defense should be able to keep the Gamecocks from creating too many explosive plays, while Kentucky's rushing attack gives it a relatively reliable way to control possession.
South Carolina's home-field advantage makes this dangerous.
I see this as a late-game decision rather than a comfortable Kentucky win.
**Projected: Kentucky 27, South Carolina 24**
---
### 10. #10 BYU @ TCU
**Prediction: BYU 27–24**
BYU is one of the intriguing unbeaten teams at **3–0** and remains No. 10.
TCU is 2–2 and has home-field advantage.
This is a matchup where I expect the game to stay relatively close because TCU should have enough offensive success at home to prevent BYU from controlling the game completely.
BYU's biggest advantage is its consistency. The Cougars have avoided the major mistakes that can turn a close road game into a loss.
I expect a late BYU scoring drive to decide it.
**Projected: BYU 27, TCU 24**
---
### 11. Washington @ #18 USC
**Prediction: USC 34–27**
USC is 4–1 but coming off a **41–27 loss to Oregon**.
Washington is 3–1 and presents a much more difficult matchup than a typical unranked opponent.
USC's biggest question is how it responds after Oregon's offensive success. Oregon was able to create multiple scoring drives, and USC now needs to prevent Washington from doing something similar.
USC has enough offensive talent to put up points at the Coliseum.
I expect a fairly high-scoring game, with USC producing just enough in the fourth quarter.
**Projected: USC 34, Washington 27**
---
### 12. #4 Miami @ Clemson
**Prediction: Miami 31–20**
Miami has been one of the most statistically impressive teams in the country.
The Hurricanes are **4–0**, averaging **51.8 points per game**, while quarterback Darian Mensah is leading the nation in passing efficiency at **228.23**, with an **88.7% completion rate** and 14 touchdown passes. ([Covers.com][9])
Miami also finished September with a **52–3** demolition of Central Michigan. ([ACCSports.com][10])
Clemson is 3–1 and has home-field advantage, so I don't expect Miami to cruise.
There is also an interesting injury factor: Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina is listed as questionable with an elbow injury. Miami, meanwhile, has several players returning or expected to return, including defensive contributors. ([Covers.com][9])
That makes Miami's offensive consistency particularly important.
**Projected: Miami 31, Clemson 20**
---
### 13. #12 Texas Tech @ Colorado
**Prediction: Texas Tech 38–24**
Texas Tech is 4–0 and coming off a **49–14** victory over Sam Houston.
The Red Raiders had an unusual defensive performance in that game, returning two interceptions for touchdowns, while the offense eventually pulled away after a difficult start. ([SI][3])
Colorado is 2–2 and gets the major benefit of playing at altitude in Boulder.
That should help Colorado early.
But Texas Tech has considerably more offensive consistency and should be able to attack Colorado's defense both on the ground and through the air.
I expect Colorado to score enough to keep this interesting into the second half, followed by a Texas Tech separation.
**Projected: Texas Tech 38, Colorado 24**
---
### 14. Utah State @ #22 Boise State
**Prediction: Boise State 38–17**
Boise State is 3–1 and ranked No. 22 after a dominant **32–7** victory over Western Michigan.
Utah State is 1–3.
The biggest factor is the overall physical mismatch.
Boise State should be able to establish the run and control field position, while Utah State will need explosive plays to keep pace.
At Albertsons Stadium, I expect Boise State to control this from the middle of the second quarter onward.
**Projected: Boise State 38, Utah State 17**
---
### 15. McNeese @ #11 LSU
**Prediction: LSU 42–10**
LSU is coming off its most impressive performance of the season: a **35–6** destruction of Texas A&M.
The Tigers were particularly dominant after struggling the previous week against Ole Miss. The LSU defense completely overwhelmed Texas A&M, while the Aggies managed only 2.8 yards per carry and no offensive touchdowns. ([SI][3])
McNeese is the FCS opponent, and LSU's size, depth and defensive front should eventually overwhelm the Cowboys.
The only reason I'm not projecting an even larger margin is the possibility of LSU rotating heavily once the game is decided.
**Projected: LSU 42, McNeese 10**
---
### 16. #6 Indiana @ Rutgers
**Prediction: Indiana 38–17**
Indiana is unbeaten at **4–0** and ranked No. 6.
Rutgers is 1–3.
Indiana's undefeated start has been built on consistency rather than one isolated explosive performance. Rutgers will have the home crowd, but Indiana should be superior in both line play and overall offensive efficiency.
I expect Indiana to control the game rather than simply overwhelm Rutgers with passing.
The Scarlet Knights could score late against Indiana's backups, producing a final margin around three touchdowns.
**Projected: Indiana 38, Rutgers 17**
---

GEORGIA 38-17
FLORIDA 34-27
TENNESSEE 31-24

KENTUCKY 27-24
BYU 27-24
USC 34-27
MIAMI 31-20
TEXAS TECH 38-24
BOISE STATE 38-17
LSU 42-10
INDIANA 38-17
```
### A few games I would watch particularly closely
**Alabama–Mississippi State** — both 4–0, two exciting young quarterbacks, and Mississippi State's home field makes the margin difficult to project. ([Yahoo Sports][11])
**Ohio State–Iowa** — elite Ohio State passing attack against an Iowa defense allowing only 8 points per game. This is the biggest statistical contrast of the slate. ([Covers.com][8])
**Florida–Missouri** — Florida has enormous momentum after its 52–28 win over Ole Miss, but Missouri gets the home field. ([AP News][5])
**Miami–Clemson** — Miami's offense has been exceptional, but Clemson's home field and the uncertainty around its quarterback make the matchup less straightforward than the rankings suggest. ([Covers.com][9])
**BYU–TCU** — one of the better opportunities for an unbeaten ranked team to encounter real road resistance.
Overall, I expect **the ranked teams to win most of these games**, but the four games I regard as the most difficult score projections are **Alabama–Mississippi State, Ohio State–Iowa, Florida–Missouri, and BYU–TCU**. That assessment is based on the matchup data and current team situations rather than an overall ranking of the teams.
